NRO prompts war of words at PA session
LAHORE: Lawmakers from the Pakistan Muslim League-Quaid (PML-Q), its breakaway faction and the PML-Nawaz (PML-N) shouted slogans against the National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO) during the Punjab Assembly session on Monday, which resulted in a clash between the ‘anti-NRO group’ and the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) parliamentarians. However, provincial ministers from both the PML-N and the PPP remained silent. The lawmakers accused each other of being turncoats and shouted chants of “NRO not acceptable”, “apology not acceptable” and “deals not acceptable”. Assessing the gravity of the situation, PA Speaker Rana Muhammad Iqbal adjourned the session until today (Tuesday). Lawmakers will discuss the affairs of the Interior Ministry during the question and answers session at today’s session. Five resolutions would also be tabled today. The assembly session started three hour late because Senior Minister Raja Riaz and Law and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Rana Sanaullah Khan reached the Assembly Hall at 6pm. Legislators also recorded their protest on the floor against the delay in starting the session. Later, the Punjab Assembly unanimously passed a resolution in support of the military operation in South Waziristan and declared terrorists the enemies of Islam and Pakistan. They also condemned the terror attacks in the country. The law minister presented a resolution in which he prayed for the completion of the military operation in south Waziristan and elimination of the Taliban. He said terrorists had now resorted to targeting innocent people, especially women and children. staff report
